Our school aims to provide an English speaking environment for students to immerse in the language so that they can become more confident to utilise English in their daily lives and to build upon a solid foundation as they progress throughout their studies. The curriculum focuses on the skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking.
In order to best integrate the textbook with additional reading practise, our well-qualified and experienced NET, Mr Arnold, has written the school-based reading and writing programme for P1-P3. Not only does he teach every P1 to P3 class every week, but does reading levelling assessments with every student to determine instructional and independent reading levels. The children participate in both shared and guided reading in his lessons. Moreover, suitable fiction and non-fiction books for learners to read in our home-based reading system are also assigned. He aims to enhance students’ reading , writing and phonological awareness skills.
For senior form students, we adopt the Key Stage 2 Integration Programme (KIP) from the EDB NET Section. Students read an English book with their English teacher once a week, meanwhile they apply advanced reading skills and terminology. Every lesson is followed by a guided reading session with practical reading and writing activities. With the integration of the KIP programme, students are able to develop hands-on reading skills and apply decoding strategies.
We have designed school-based phonics booklets for all grade levels. With the help of “fingertalk”, a blending method used in SWKPS, the majority of students can sound out words on their own. Also, it helps support students with their spelling skills. Our school has continued to collaborate with EDB school-based support services and have developed a complete key stage 2 phonics and speaking curriculum (P4-6) to equip our students for their speaking and interview challenge for their next stage of education.
